What is it?

Whether you have been referred to us for an assessment or you have questions about your child’s mental wellbeing, it’s our job to give you answers.
A psychoeducational assessment is not as daunting as it may sound. Quite simply, one of our clinical psychologists will carry out a series of standard psychological tests to determine your child’s needs and to ensure that they are matched to the right therapist for treatment.

Who needs it ?

Are you faced with any of the following questions? Does my child have ADHD? Is there something getting in the way of their ability to learn?

If you have questions about your child’s learning development, or if your child is experiencing behavioural, social, or learning difficulties, a psychoeducational assessment will help you identify their unique strengths and weaknesses. We can equip you with the knowledge you need to support your child, both academically and socially.

Alternatively, a teacher or counsellor may have referred you to The LightHouse to answer questions or concerns about your child’s cognitive, academic or behavioural functioning.

We also assess children who are functioning within and above the normal range; this standard assessment can give you an in-depth profile of your child’s behaviour, personality, cognitive and academic abilities, and social skills so that you can help them reach their full potential.

Process

A psychoeducational assessment is typically carried out over a few weeks.

  • You and your child’s teacher will be asked to complete an email form about your child, which must be brought to the diagnostic intake appointment.
  • The diagnostic intake is a one-hour session that takes place at The LightHouse clinic with one or both parents to review the developmental history of your child. Your child is not present.
  • You will be asked to give consent for our therapists to speak with your child’s teacher; you may also be asked to give consent for a psychologist to observe your child in class for a 20-30 minute period.
  • An appointment will then be scheduled for the assessment.
  • The assessment is usually conducted in our clinic over a course of two to three days (a total of five to six hours), and includes cognitive, achievement and behavioural measures to assess IQ, learning ability, behaviour and any childhood disorders.
  • Once all the data is collected, our psychologist will consult with another psychologist on our team to get a thorough picture of the assessment scores and results.
  • The information will be synthesized and compiled in a comprehensive psychoeducational report, which we will discuss with you face-to-face in a feedback session lasting 30 minutes to one hour.

Our assessment specialists

One of our doctoral-level clinical psychologists will conduct the psychoeducational assessment, write the report, and give feedback and recommendations. They have specialist training in conducting and interpreting assessments, differential diagnosis, and neuropsychological etiology. You will receive the most accurate information about your child’s abilities, in addition to detailed recommendations about how best to support your child’s needs at home, in school and in social situations.
